MOVE

I Make Schools and Classrooms

Advancing children’s physical literacy through research, teaching, and community-based practice.

Cat Thomas is an educator and emerging scholar whose work focuses on physical literacy, early childhood education, and equity in movement-based learning. Her research examines how educator beliefs, institutional structures, and sociocultural contexts shape young children’s access to meaningful physical activity experiences, with a particular focus on Black children in underserved communities. She is especially interested in how physical literacy development can be supported through culturally informed pedagogy and system-level change in early childhood settings.

Her work contributes to interdisciplinary scholarship in early childhood education and child health by framing physical literacy as an equity-driven construct shaped by both instructional practice and broader educational systems. She is actively engaged in teaching, professional learning, and scholarly collaboration and is available for invited lectures, conference presentations, and higher education engagements.

What is physical literacy?
by Cat Thomas

Physical literacy is understood in this work as engaging in movement in ways that are meaningful, confident, and sustainable across the lifespan. My work examines how early experiences in the home, school, and community shape children’s development of physical literacy and their long-term engagement in physical activity. I am particularly focused on how educator practice, institutional structures, and access to resources influence opportunities for movement, especially for children in underserved communities. This systems-based perspective informs my research and the work of the Thomas Center for Learning and Physical Literacy Development.

Exploring how movement supports children's overall development, confidence, and lifelong health.

what I do

Research & Projects

My doctoral research explores what Pre-K educators understand, believe and do to support the development of physical literacy in Black children. I lead community projects to support the overall well-being and physical health of children and their families.

Presentations & Trainings

I speak at conferences, lead keynotes, and join panel discussions on leadership, education, and physical literacy. I use props, storytelling, interactive simulations, humor, and real-world examples to unpack hard conversations and drive problem-solving in schools.

Teaching & Practice

I promote physical literacy

in PreK to 8th graders at

Thomas Center. I host school workshops to engage students in the art of stepping, music, dance, fitness, structured movement games, and nutrition education.
